Electronic Chemotherapy System

Electronic chemotherapy prescribing offers significant advantages over paper-based systems in terms of patient safety and the efficient and effective use of resources. It also offers a potential solution to the challenges of the increasing demands which will be made of chemotherapy services as a result of increases in cancer incidence (due to the ageing population) and the introduction of new, more complex chemotherapy treatments.

Following a national procurement process, CIS Oncology’s ChemoCare system was selected as the national chemotherapy electronic prescribing and administration system for Scotland. The benefits of the ChemoCare system include:

  • built-in safety features to prevent errors in calculating dosages and drug reconstitution
  • provision for monitoring of dose modifications
  • automatic inclusion of supportive drugs in package
  • provision of a facility for clinical audit and financial monitoring
  • availability of patient prescription details at all sites 24/7
  • automatic scheduling of patient care
  • remote prescribing facility

SCAN is now upgrading its version of  ChemoCare across the region, and this will involve SCAN clinical, nursing, pharmacy and e-Health teams.
